Mr. Appendinecco Munyao Mbondo- Founder’s Story

Dr. Munyao Mbondo, the founder of the Lulu Light Foundation, was born in 1965 in Yatta Sub-County, Machakos County, Kenya. Being a staunch Christian who believes in Jesus Christ and upholds Christian values, he is privileged to be one of the elders of the African Inland Church at Ikombe LCC, Machakos County, in Kenya, where he and his family get spiritual nourishment.

As a career teacher, he has dedicated his life to teaching, developing young talents, and mentoring youths in various schools in Kenya, where he has helped and empowered numerous young people to become responsible and reliable individuals in society.

As a Christian, a father, and a teacher, he is deeply moved by compassion when he encounters children who lack basic necessities such as daily meals, access to clean drinking water, and education. Many of these children are orphans living in extremely difficult conditions, while others come from families so impoverished that they struggle to survive below the poverty line.

In a bid to cushion these children from the predicaments, he started Lulu Light School, which enables him to cater for education needs of ten (10) students who are in different schools. One of them is at Ikombe Day and Boarding Primary School, two others are at Ikombe Secondary School, another is at Kaluluini Polytechnic, and the rest are at Lulu Light School.

Dr. Mbondo believes in sharing and sacrificing his financial resources to help transform the lives of the vulnerable children to become self-reliant and responsible members of society who can help their poor families meet their daily needs. He draws much of his inspiration from Jesus Christ, who gave his life as a ransom for many.

He envisions building strong and inclusive communities where the poor, the orphaned, and the neglected children are protected and supported, and where they are allowed to realize their potential despite circumstances that would otherwise jeopardize their destiny.

Formation of Lulu Light School

Mr. Mbondo is the founder of theLulu Light School, which has a student population of 510. Among them, six (6) are sponsored by the Lulu Light Foundation, which he founded in the year 2025.

Inspired by the challenges he had seen throughout his career, especially in rural Machakos, Mr. Mbondo took a bold step to extend his impact beyond public institutions. With the support of the community, he established the Lulu Light School — a safe haven where vulnerable and needy children could access quality education regardless of background.

He envisions building strong and inclusive communities where the poor, the orphaned, and the neglected children are protected and supported, and where they are allowed to realize their potential despite circumstances that would otherwise jeopardize their destin.

Despite his tireless efforts, hard work, and dedication to this vision, Dr. Mbondo faces financial constraints that prevent him from reaching many who are in dire need of education and other primary necessities. This has led to the founding of the Lulu Light Foundation to mobilize financial resources so that he can expand support to many more needy children, poor families, and the youth.

Motivation to start Lulu Light Foundation

Dr. Munyao Mbondo is a man who is naturally inspired and touched by the needs of others. Coming from a poor background, he understands what it means to sleep hungry, trek barefoot to a school with poor structures and facilities, far away from their home. He managed to patiently undertake his studies with the help of his poor parents all these challenges notwithstanding, until he became a career teacher.

His inspiration to support the needy students started back in the year 1993, when he was the head teacher of Ikombe Primary School. He met a boy who could not proceed to secondary school even after scoring 571 out of 700 marks in the then standard eight national examination. The poor boy, whose dream had been cut short, had gone herding because his father could not afford school fees. Dr. Mbondo requested him to repeat the class and see how he could be assisted.

Later in the year, he acquired the Starehe Boys Centre scholarship forms for the poor boy and filled them out. After scoring so highly, the boy was absorbed and was able to go through his form four course. He later made it to university and became a career person thereafter. The poor boy became a dependable man who could help his poor family educate his siblings

Dr. Mbondo later helped many other children to access this and many other scholarships for needy students, including Wings to Fly of Equity Bank and Palm House Foundation. Due to the growing number of needy children, he later began to sponsor children from his own pocket. He has mentored so many boys and girls who have become responsible and self-reliant men and women in society.

This and many other like stories inspired Dr. Mbondo to look for other like-minded people to start a foundation through which they could give an opportunity to well-wishers to assist them in rescuing vulnerable children and give them hope by educating them and helping them to realize their full potential through mentorship programs.

This is how the idea of the Lulu Light Children Foundation was born. It is registered under the Public Benefits Regulatory Authority established under section 34 of the Public Benefits Organizations Act of the Kenyan constitution. The foundation is also registered with the NGOs board of Kenya.

A Life’s Mission: Lighting the Path for Children

From transforming a rural school into a national academic giant, to founding a school and a foundation, Mr. Mbondo’s journey is one of vision, resilience, and unwavering commitment to children’s rights.

Through the initiative of Lulu Light School, we believe that every child is a light — and when nurtured, that light can brighten families, communities, and nations. Mr. Mbondo’s life story is living proof that education is the greatest equalizer, and that with the right opportunities, vulnerable children can rise to their full potential.
